divago lungo le rive, in una splendida e tersa mattinata, amabilmente arruffato dalla bora a 80km/h. nel cielo i gabbiani si librano paralleli, becco a nordest, e assecondano le forti raffiche con ampie e veloci virate fino a un nuovo equilibrio. sotto il velo di spuma fioriscono le innumerevoli meduse.
c’erano anni in cui, in giorni come questi, m’inebriavo di tutte le ragazze che incontravo.
l’enorme mole immacolata dell’ermengald – ammiraglia della geriatric cruise line – sovrasta la banchina dissestata della stazione marittima. gli avanguardisti della classe ’99 sciamano compatti sul molo – hanno 6 ore di tempo per visitare il friuli venezia giulia – ma sono presto respinti e dispersi dalle folate di vento. un turbine di cappellini, giornali, guide, foulard si leva nel cielo e prende il largo, rasentando le onde. i gabbiani si gettano rapidi in picchiata e cabrano, con strida frustrate.
una coppia si avvicina barcollante e tenta di attirare l’attenzione: un’esemplare femmina del tardo pliocene, a braccetto con la figlia coetanea. indossano la tenuta da sbarco dei crocieristi: cappello di paglia ampio come un tavolino da bar, camicione decorato a fiori e tralci, comode braghe alla pescatora, sandali in materiale composito.
- – hi! excuse me, where are the cannons?
- – sorry? cannons, you mean in a museum or what?
- – well, i came here in trieste half a century ago for the first time.
- – a long time ago.
- – during the allied government, you know? on a ship full of soldiers. i was the only woman.
abbozzo un sorriso, con espressione comprensiva e polisemica.
- – ah, no, no, it’s not as you think: nothing to do with soldiers.

ora la voce è stridula ed eccitata, la figlia annuisce con forza.
- – what about the cannons? where are they? we went there to make love, you know.
