bartolomeo era piemontese, di villafalletto. era arrivato fino alla sesta elementare, poi aveva fatto il garzone per un fornaio. nicola era di torremaggiore, in puglia, e aveva imparato i rudimenti dell’arte del calzolaio per non morire zappando sotto il sole.
a 17 anni, nel 1908, sbarcarono a boston. vi arrivarono per caso, cercavano solo un lavoro e una vita dignitosi. erano due immigrati senza permesso come tanti, due dago come allora venivano chiamati con disprezzo gli italiani. l’america di quegli anni aveva fame di braccia a costo zero o quasi ma era impreparata nei confronti di questi portatori sani di idee, cultura e abitudini pericolose e sovversive.
nicola e bartolomeo si conobbero a boston, dove cominciarono a lavorare onestamente come pescivendolo e calzolaio. abitavano nella pensione di una vedova italiana, un covo di anarchici e sindacalisti. insieme ai compagni leggevano e discutevano le pagine della cronaca sovversiva di luigi galleani, diffuso dal tipografo andrea salsedo, uno dei soliti anarchici con il brutto vizio di cadere dalla finestra durante gli interrogatori in commissariato.
la guerra, la rivoluzione bolscevica, gli attentati, gli scioperi delle donne nelle filande, la forte immigrazione alimentarono le paranoie delle classi alte di boston, che divenne il fronte principale di una guerra combattuta con ogni mezzo da politici, giudici e poliziotti.
un pomeriggio dell’aprile del 1920, il cassiere di una tessitura e la sua guardia del corpo furono uccisi per rapinare oltre 15mila dollari. si scatenarono subito i rastrellamenti di stranieri e rossi e quando un testimone della rapina affermò di averli riconosciuti, nicola sacco e bartolomeo vanzetti furono arrestati. addosso gli trovarono due revolver e un volantino rivoluzionario (un invito ad una conferenza per lavoratori, esteso a donne e bambini).
le foto dei due italiani fecero il giro del mondo. nicola, la faccia da bravo ragazzo, e bartolomeo, l’aria di un domatore fuggito dal circo, sembrano posare orgogliosi per l’improvvisa notorietà mentre con il vestito della domenica e il colletto duro fissano con espressione composta e seria l’obiettivo. intorno, i poliziotti hanno la stessa faccia soddisfatta di un gruppo di pescatori attorno ad un marlin di 800 chili.
il processo fu una farsa. l’unica prova a carico di nicola e bart – come ormai li chiamavano tutti – era l’automobile usata dagli assassini per fuggire. il procuratore accusò vanzetti di averla avuta in prestito in altre occasioni e inutilmente l’avvocato dimostrò che si trattava di un’auto diversa. inutilmente sfilarono davanti al giudice file di testimoni: vanzetti vendeva il pesce per strada, al momento del delitto, e sacco – come testimoniò il console stesso – era al consolato italiano per chiedere un passaporto e tornare in italia, convinto di aver sbagliato a compiere quel viaggio 12 anni prima. non fu nemmeno considerata la confessione del gangster di una banda di criminali italiani che fornì nomi, circostanze e dettagli. sacco e vanzetti erano ormai il capro espiatorio di un’america che in loro vedeva l’avanguardia di un minaccioso esercito che avrebbe sovvertito e distrutto la società. so bene perché sono qui, disse nicola nel suo semplice inglese, sono qui perché gli oppressori devono ammazzare gli oppressi per restare superiori. faccia come le pare, giudice. faccio un po’ come cazzo me pare, pensò infatti il giudice.
l’agonia si protrasse per 6 anni. nel frattempo innumerevoli cortei chiedevano giustizia, e un grande scrittore come john dos passos scriveva brava america maledetta, hai ucciso te stessa. nicola e bart trascorrevano il tempo leggendo dostoevskij, proudhon e malatesta o scrivendo molte lettere incredule e orgogliose. e se mi uccidereste e io potrebbe rinascere, io tornasse davanti a voi giudici per farmi ammazzare ancora, scriveva sacco.
i due amici terminarono il loro viaggio sfortunato il 22 agosto del 1927, arrostiti sulla sedia elettrica.
